How We Build a Lawn

  1. Rough grade. We shape the yard so water drains away from the house and across the lawn the way it should — the step that determines whether your yard stays dry for the next thirty years.
  2. Topsoil. Screened topsoil spread at proper depth — not a cosmetic skim over compacted fill. Roots need real soil to grow into.
  3. Fine grade. The surface is smoothed and refined so the finished lawn mows flat, with no dips that scalp or hollows that puddle.
  4. Seed and protect. Quality seed matched to your site’s sun and use, with straw or matting to hold moisture and protect against washout while it establishes.

When a New Lawn Makes Sense

  • New construction — turning graded dirt around a new home, garage, or pole barn into a finished yard
  • Full renovations — when a yard is more weeds, moss, and bare dirt than grass, rebuilding beats another season of patching

How long until it looks like a lawn?

Green fuzz in two to three weeks, a mowable stand in six to eight, and a lawn that looks established by the following season. The first months of watering matter — we’ll leave you with straightforward care instructions.

My builder already spread topsoil. Do I need more?

Usually, yes. Builder-grade lawns commonly get an inch or two of unscreened soil over heavily compacted ground — enough to look finished, not enough to sustain turf. We’ll check what’s actually there and tell you honestly what the yard needs.
