Pole Barn Pads & Laser Grading in the Lehigh Valley
A building is only as good as the pad underneath it. Whether you’re putting up a pole barn, a detached garage, or a building with large flat work, the grading has to be right — flat, properly compacted, and pitched exactly where it should be. That’s why we use laser-guided grading equipment on every pad we build.
Sullivan Excavating and Landscaping installs laser-graded building pads across Lehigh and Northampton Counties — residential pole barns and garages, plus commercial pads and large-area precision flat work.

What Is Laser Grading?
Laser grading uses a rotating laser transmitter and machine-mounted receivers to hold the grading equipment to a fraction of an inch across the entire pad. Instead of eyeballing grade with a level and string lines, the machine holds the exact elevation and pitch automatically — across the whole surface, every pass. What that means for you:
- A truly flat pad. Your builder starts square and level instead of fighting a wavy base.
- Real savings on concrete. On a slab pour, every half-inch of unevenness gets filled with concrete you pay for. A laser-graded subgrade means the slab pours at its designed thickness — on larger pads, that alone can offset the cost of the grading.
- Correct drainage, guaranteed. Where a precise pitch is specified — away from the building, toward a drain — laser control holds it exactly.
- Even compaction. Uniform material depth compacts consistently, so the pad doesn’t settle under the building.
Pole Barn & Garage Pads
Pole barn pads are one of our specialties. We take the pad from raw ground to build-ready: site layout and topsoil stripping, cut and fill to design elevation, the pad built up in compacted stone lifts, and the finished surface laser-graded to tolerance — with the apron oversized so you have workable, mud-free space around the building.
We coordinate directly with your pole barn builder on pad size, elevation, and specs, so when they show up they can start setting posts — no surprises, no delays, no change orders for pad corrections. We also build pads for detached garages, sheds, and outbuildings, and can tie in a gravel driveway to your new building while we’re on site.
Commercial Laser Grading & Large Flat Work
For commercial projects, laser grading pays for itself in material savings and schedule. We provide precision fine grading for commercial building pads and slab subgrade prep, floors requiring tight flatness tolerances, large stone staging areas, and any large-area flat work where grade and pitch are specified on the plans. We work to your engineered specs, and laser-controlled equipment delivers consistency across large areas that hand-checking can’t match.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a pole barn pad cost?
It depends on pad size, how much cut and fill the site needs, stone depth, and access — sloped sites need more material than flat ones. Send us your pad dimensions and location and we’ll give you a detailed estimate.
How big should my pad be?
We typically recommend extending the pad several feet beyond the building footprint on all sides for a clean, workable apron, and we’ll confirm exact size against your builder’s specs.
When should the pad go in?
Ideally a few weeks before your builder’s start date, so the pad is ready and any adjustments happen without delaying construction. Spring and fall book up fast — get on the schedule early.
